Memphis Grizzlies Rookie Jaylen Wells Injury

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Memphis Grizzlies rookie guard Jaylen Wells is facing a significant setback after breaking his right wrist during a fast-break dunk in a game against the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday night.

The incident occurred late in the fourth quarter when Wells caught an outlet pass from teammate Ja Morant. As he elevated for the dunk, Hornets guard KJ Simpson inadvertently undercut him, causing Wells to land awkwardly on his arm and head. He was immediately attended to and remained on the court for several minutes before being transferred to a stretcher and taken to a local hospital.

“It puts everything into perspective seeing that situation and to see Jaylen there,” said interim coach Tuomas Iisalo. “He’s an incredibly tough kid and had a great season.”

Despite the injury, Wells was alert and asked medical personnel about the game score. His father, Fred Wells, reported that his son was experiencing pain but retained movement in all his extremities.

The game was delayed for a total of 23 minutes, including warm-up time, due to the incident. Simpson was assessed a Flagrant 2 foul for unnecessary contact following a video review and was ejected from the game. Simpson later expressed his concern for Wells. “It’s tough. I threw the pass and turned around to celebrate. The first thing I saw was blood, and I’ve got a weak stomach,” he said. “We’ve just got to stay with him and keep praying for him.”

Wells has been instrumental for the Grizzlies this season, starting 74 of 79 games and averaging 10.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. With the Grizzlies now tied for fourth place in the competitive Western Conference, the injury comes at a critical time as the team prepares for the playoffs.

“We have to adjust and step up now,” added Morant. “It’s next man up, and we’ll keep pushing forward.”

The Grizzlies will continue their playoff push without Wells, who has emerged as a key player during his rookie campaign.
