FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Lionel Messi returned to form on Wednesday night, leading Inter Miami to a 4-2 victory against CF Montréal at Chase Stadium. The win marked a significant milestone in Messi’s career, as he became the first player in club history to accumulate 50 goal contributions in MLS regular season play.

Messi scored two goals and provided an assist in the match, extending his total to 29 goals and 21 assists in just 37 games. His standout performance also helped lift Inter Miami to sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings with 26 points, despite having played one fewer game than the teams ranked above them.

The match’s defining moment occurred during Inter Miami’s final goal when Messi executed a give-and-go with teammate Luis Suárez. This play led to Messi calmly chipping the ball over the Montreal goalkeeper to secure his brace.

“Lionel Messi became the first player in club history to produce 50 goal contributions, doing so in just his 37th game,” the official MLS PR account confirmed after the match. Messi’s impressive tally includes eight goals and five assists this season alone.

Both Messi and Suárez were recognized for their contributions by being named to the MLS Team of the Matchday presented by Audi following their impactful performances. Messi opened the scoring in the 27th minute and assisted Suárez’s goal shortly thereafter before capping off his night with a stunning finish late in the game.

Messi’s achievement comes on the heels of ending a four-match winless streak for Inter Miami. The team looks forward to their next challenge against the Columbus Crew on Saturday, May 31, and the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup on June 14 against Al Ahly.

“We need to maintain our focus and improve defensively as we move forward in the season,” said Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano. “Our goal is to build confidence and keep winning.”
