D.K. Metcalf Requests Trade from Seahawks as Offseason Heats Up

SEATTLE—Seattle Seahawks wide receiver D.K. Metcalf has officially requested a trade, expressing a preference to join a contending team, according to a source familiar with the situation. The request was made on the same day the Seahawks announced the release of fellow receiver Tyler Lockett, a franchise icon, causing some friction within the organization.
The Seahawks are reportedly upset that news of Metcalf’s trade request leaked around a time they wanted to celebrate Lockett’s 10 years with the team. General manager John Schneider indicated that the organization is committed to doing what is best for both Metcalf and the team moving forward. “Everything is in a very cordial, professional place… Obviously, D.K. has requested a trade, and we are entertaining that,” Schneider told Seattle Sports 710-AM.
Metcalf, 27, is entering the final year of a three-year, $72 million extension signed in 2022, with an expected salary of approximately $18 million in 2025. Following a season with 66 catches for 992 yards and five touchdowns, he aims for a new contract ahead of what could be a pivotal year.
While the Seahawks have engaged in trade discussions regarding Metcalf, the exact nature of those talks remains unclear. Trading him before June 1 would save the Seahawks nearly $10.9 million in cap space but would also impose $21 million in dead money this season. Schneider hinted at a timeline for a decision, indicating the draft may serve as a deadline for any potential trade to happen.
In recent seasons, Metcalf has been a crucial part of Seattle’s offensive strategy, despite some injury setbacks. This past season, he missed two games due to a knee injury, impacting his targets. New head coach Mike Macdonald has emphasized the importance of reinstating Metcalf’s role in the Seahawks’ game plan, particularly after a year when he averaged just 6 targets per game after his return.
Metcalf’s versatility and size have made him a standout receiver since he was drafted in 2019, where he quickly established himself as a key playmaker, setting franchise records along the way. Despite his performance, he has faced scrutiny for his discipline on the field, accumulating 38 penalties, which is significantly higher than other wide receivers since 2019.
As the Seahawks navigate this transition period, Schneider reassured fans that the organization is committed to addressing their needs effectively, whether that includes trading Metcalf or finding a way to retain him as part of their plans going forward. “There are a lot of things to consider, and we will make the right choice for both sides,” Schneider said.
