D.K. Metcalf Requests Trade Amid Seattle Seahawks’ Offseason Changes

SEATTLE — D.K. Metcalf, star wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks, has formally requested a trade from the team, expressing a desire to join a contender. The news surfaced shortly after the franchise announced the release of veteran receiver Tyler Lockett, a move that freed up $27 million in salary cap space.
Metcalf’s agent confirmed the player’s intentions to leave Seattle on Wednesday. The 27-year-old, who is entering the last year of a three-year, $72 million extension, hopes to secure a move to a team with playoff aspirations. According to a source familiar with the situation, the Seahawks management is actively seeking trade options.
Seahawks General Manager John Schneider addressed the media regarding the situation, stating, “Everything is in a very cordial, professional place. Obviously, D.K. has requested a trade, and we are entertaining that.” He added that the organization is exploring discussions with multiple teams to find the best possible deal.
Despite the trade request, Schneider left the door open for Metcalf to remain with the Seahawks, emphasizing the team’s commitment to doing what is best for both the organization and the player. “Hopefully both those things merge and it’s an ideal situation. Sometimes that happens, sometimes it doesn’t,” Schneider said.
Metcalf concluded the season with 66 catches for 992 yards and five touchdowns, missing two games due to a knee injury. His performance, however, has been marred by discipline concerns, as he has accrued more penalties than any other wide receiver since 2019. Schneider acknowledged Metcalf’s work ethic and professionalism throughout the negotiation process.
As trade discussions commence, the Seahawks have cited a timeline, indicating they desire clarity on Metcalf’s future before the upcoming NFL Draft. Schneider remarked, “You definitely want to know what’s going on before draft time because he’s such an important part of our team and organization.”
The Seahawks will consider offers for Metcalf as they navigate their salary cap situation; should they trade him before June 1, they could save an additional $10.9 million in cap space. The Seahawks now roughly have $32 million available to spend as they prepare for free agency.
Metcalf, who has already made two Pro Bowl appearances, was drafted in 2019 and has since become one of the NFL’s top receivers, setting the franchise record for receiving yards in a player’s first six seasons. His requests signal a potential shift in the team’s direction, especially after the recent release of Lockett, leaving the Seahawks with significant reconstruction ahead in their receiving corps.
Schneider confirmed ongoing conversations regarding Metcalf’s future, stating, “We want to know how we’re going to compensate for his loss if he’s not with us.” The Seahawks now face the challenge of rebuilding their offensive lineup to maintain competitiveness in the league.
