Mets Announce Roster Changes Ahead of Homestand Against Cardinals

NEW YORK, NY — The New York Mets made several key roster moves Thursday in preparation for their seven-game homestand, which kicks off tonight against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Mets placed outfielder Jose Siri on the 10-day injured list due to a left tibia fracture sustained during his at-bat against the Oakland Athletics on Saturday.
As a result of Siri’s injury, the Mets called up veteran outfielder José Azócar from Triple-A Syracuse Mets. Azócar, 28, had a challenging season in 2024 with the San Diego Padres, recording a .219 batting average with no home runs, two RBIs, and five stolen bases over 61 games. He was designated for assignment on September 2, but the Mets claimed him off waivers shortly after.
Azócar has yet to solidify his position in Major League Baseball, holding a career batting line of .243/.287/.322 with two home runs and 21 RBIs across 214 games. His upcoming debut with the Mets provides an opportunity to change that narrative.
In addition to Azócar, the Mets also recalled reliever Max Kranick from Triple-A. Kranick had been optioned the previous day after the team called up reliever Justin Hagenman, who pitched 3.1 innings during a bullpen game against the Minnesota Twins. Hagenman was sent back down to Syracuse following that outing.
Kranick’s return to the big leagues has been on the horizon. After joining the Mets off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates last season, he has impressed in seven relief appearances this season with a 1.54 ERA, tallying seven strikeouts and issuing no walks across 11.2 innings.
With these roster changes, Kranick and Azócar will aim to make a significant impact on a Mets team that currently sits atop the National League East. As the season progresses, both players will look to capitalize on their opportunities to contribute to the team’s success.
