New York Mets Baseball Player Pete Alonso

NEW YORK, NY – The New York Mets have been busy this offseason, with rumors circulating about potential replacements for first baseman Pete Alonso. Among the discussions was the idea of moving Mark Vientos to first base while seeking a third baseman, a position that lacked significant free agent talent.

One name that surfaced was shortstop Willy Adames of the Milwaukee Brewers. Adames had a decent 2024 season, with statistics comparable to what would be viewed as a down year for Alonso. However, his performance with the San Francisco Giants has raised concerns.

Adames, who played just 34 games this season, has struggled at the plate, posting two home runs and 15 RBIs with a disappointing .215/.302/.300 batting line. Despite a salary of over $13 million this year and the next, his contract escalates to over $31 million for each of the final five years, creating a potential financial burden for the Giants.

Despite his contract, the Mets seem to be reassured by their decision to re-sign Alonso. His personality fits well within the organization, and he has been a reliable player during his tenure. With Adames’ shaky start, deeper doubts about his impact and long-term value have emerged.

Ultimately, even if Adames finds his form, the Mets may feel vindicated in their choice to keep Alonso, who continues to be a central figure for the team.
