Mets Designate Cabrera, Azocar for Assignment, Call Up Waddell and Young

NEW YORK, NY — The New York Mets announced a series of roster changes before their game on Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Left-handed reliever Génesis Cabrera and outfielder José Azocar were designated for assignment to create space for Brandon Waddell and Jared Young, who were recalled from Triple-A Syracuse.
Cabrera, 28, had been one of the southpaws added to the Mets’ bullpen following injuries to A.J. Minter and Danny Young. In six appearances with the team, Cabrera recorded a 3.52 ERA and struck out seven batters over 7.2 innings. However, after pitching 20 pitches in Friday’s 13-inning marathon against the Dodgers, he would likely have been unavailable for Saturday’s matchup.
The lengthy game also featured a rain delay that led to the Mets using all eight members of their bullpen. Waddell, who has not pitched in six days, is expected to fill Cabrera’s role and provide fresher arms to the beleaguered bullpen.
Young, 29, is set to make his return to the Major Leagues after a two-year absence and will serve as the designated hitter on Saturday. Over 22 games with Syracuse, he averaged .259 with five home runs. His versatility allows him to play multiple positions on the field, which adds depth to the team, especially with injuries affecting key players.
Azocar, also 29, has struggled for playing time with only 20 plate appearances this season. He made a brief appearance as a pinch-runner on Friday night but has primarily been the team’s fifth outfielder since joining the big league roster.
Following these moves, the Mets will have five days to either trade Cabrera and Azocar or place them on waivers. Both players have had previous career outright experiences, allowing them the option to decline a minor league assignment if they clear waivers.
