Mets Drop Exhibition Game to Red Sox 6-4

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — The New York Mets fell to the Boston Red Sox 6-4 in a road exhibition game on March 2, 2025, as starting pitcher Paul Blackburn struggled early against a potent Boston lineup.
The Mets quickly found themselves in a challenging position, with Boston capitalizing on Blackburn’s performance to score several runs in the opening innings. Despite the defeat, the Grapefruit League standings do not reflect the outcome’s significance, as teams focus on player development and evaluation.
“Wins and losses in spring training aren’t the main priority,” said Mets manager Buck Showalter after the game. “It’s about getting the players ready for the regular season. We saw some positive signs today, even in the loss.”
Starting lineup for the Mets included Jeff McNeil at second base, Francisco Alvarez catching, Jesse Winker as designated hitter, and Jose Siri in center field. Other notable players included Alexander Canario in left field and Brett Baty at third base.
The Red Sox, powered by strong offensive efforts, showcased formidable hitters such as Jarren Duran and Alex Bregman, contributing to their early lead. The team’s ace, Walker Buehler, took the mound and delivered a solid performance.
“Our offense did what we needed to do,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “It’s all about finding the rhythm before the regular season starts. We’re pleased with what we saw today.”
This loss marks the fifth consecutive defeat for the Mets in the spring training series following a string of challenging games. The Mets now stand at 1-4-1 in Grapefruit League play, with their only tie against the Miami Marlins earlier in the week.
“We have to rebound,” Blackburn added. “Spring training is the time to work through these issues and prepare for what’s ahead.”
Looking ahead, the Mets will continue to assess their pitching options and offensive strategies as they approach the opening series of the regular season. Fans remain hopeful that the team will find its footing in the upcoming games.
