New York Mets Spring Training Highlights 2025

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — As the New York Mets approach the end of spring training, a mailbag feature released this week reveals insights into the first month of the 2025 season, covering everything from player transitions to roster decisions. Over 100 questions poured in, yet none focused on the $765 million contract of Juan Soto, spotlighting the larger team dynamics ahead of the season opener.

A focal point for the Mets has been the conversion of Clay Holmes to a starting pitcher, a shift that sparked questions about the differing roles of pitchers José Buttó and Holmes. ‘We liked what we saw at the end of last season from Holmes when he began incorporating a four-seamer and changeup to complement his sinker and sweeper,’ said president of baseball operations David Stearns.

The Mets emphasized that while Buttó is currently in the bullpen, they are not entirely closing the door on his future as a starter. ‘Given the state of our rotation, we want several multi-inning relievers,’ Stearns noted. Buttó’s previous season raised concerns, particularly a walk rate of 13.5 percent for starters, making him more suited for relief roles.

Another topic is the management of Holmes’ workload. ‘We don’t impose hard limits but monitor the situation,’ said Stearns. The team is optimistic, recalling how they successfully managed Luis Severino’s transition last year, when he logged 182 innings.

Beyond current players, questions arose regarding the Mets’ minor league prospects. Some fans expressed concern over a trend of struggling Mets pitching prospects at Triple A. ‘It’s not uncommon; sometimes a player just isn’t ready,’ Stearns acknowledged, adding that the quality of the Triple A baseball is different and can affect pitcher development.

The mailbag also looked ahead to the potential vision for the Mets by 2030. ‘An ideal situation would be to have a five-time reigning World Series champion,’ Stearns quipped, outlining a vision geared toward developing homegrown talent while capitalizing on strategic acquisitions for both utility players and star talent.

Questions about former fan favorites like José Iglesias sparked a debate about cult heroes in Mets history. ‘Wilmer Flores is one that comes to mind,’ Stearns remarked, emphasizing the sentimental value players can carry beyond their performance.

The departure of Francisco Alvarez to injury left the catching position uncertain. ‘Luis Torrens will step up initially, with Jakson Reetz alongside him,’ Stearns said, indicating ongoing evaluations for potential trades or signings of veteran catchers.

Looking deeper into seasons ahead, concerns about Stearns’ strategy of yearly rotation reconstruction emerged. ‘While the current method shows some success, integrating young homegrown players into the rotation is essential for long-term sustainability,’ Stearns acknowledged.

With multiple voices contributing to the discussion on future stars, player predictions picked up interest. ‘I think Sproat will see the majors first, but Tidwell is trending positively,’ Stearns added, as questions about which players might face pivotal seasons surfaced.

While several elements of the team are still taking shape, the excitement around the Mets and their renewed energy as the 2025 season begins cannot be overlooked.
