Mets Marlins Baseball Game April 2025

MIAMI, FL — The New York Mets snapped a two-game skid Monday night with a commanding 10-4 victory over the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park. The win allowed the Mets (2-2) to gain momentum after an underwhelming performance during their previous series against the Houston Astros.

The game began at 6:40 PM ET, and both teams sought to establish their seasons early. The Mets were without star shortstop Francisco Lindor, who was unavailable after welcoming his son, Koa. In his absence, Luisangel Acuña stepped in to fill the gap as the Mets aimed to rebound from their season-opening struggles.

The Marlins entered the matchup with a 3-1 record, buoyed by three thrilling walk-off wins against the Pittsburgh Pirates. On the mound for the Mets was David Peterson, who had a promising 2024 season, boasting a 2.90 ERA. The Marlins countered with Cal Quantrill, making his season debut after struggling last year.

The early innings showcased the hitters from both squads, with Otto Lopez of the Marlins hitting a solo home run in the first. However, Mets pitcher Peterson rebounded, allowing only two homers throughout his six-inning outing, finishing with two runs allowed, five hits, and nine strikeouts.

The game shifted dramatically in the fifth inning. After producing minimal offense in the first four frames, the Mets exploded for seven runs. First baseman Pete Alonso made a significant impact, launching a grand slam that extended the Mets’ lead to 6-1. Alonso’s home run followed a bases-loaded situation that put the Mets in a prime scoring position.

“I thought it was a great team win, good to get out there and pitch limits, and get six [innings],” Peterson said postgame, reflecting on his performance.

Following Alonso’s grand slam, the Mets continued to apply pressure, capitalizing on a mishap by Marlins outfielder Derek Hill, whose mis fielding allowed a long ball from Francisco Lindor to cross over the wall for two more runs.

“That inning was huge for us,” Alonso noted. “It set a tone and helped give us that cushion we needed.”

The Mets finished the inning with a commanding 8-1 lead, concluding with a two-run homer from Starling Marte in the sixth. Overall, the Mets totaled four home runs in a striking offensive display.

The Marlins also had moments of brilliance, particularly from Lopez and Brian Anderson, who both contributed with home runs. However, it wasn’t enough to counter the Mets’ offensive onslaught.

This contest not only marked the opening of a three-game series but also represented a turning point for the Mets as they look to solidify their standing in the National League East. The teams will meet again Tuesday night for the second game of the series, with the Mets featuring ace Kodai Senga, making his first start after an injury-laden 2024.

The excitement in Miami was palpable as fans awaited the continuation of this contentious matchup, hoping for a rebound from both teams. As the series unfolds, both the Mets and Marlins have much at stake in shaping their 2025 MLB destinies.
