Mets Game Highlights At Sutter Health Park

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Jose Siri was seen on crutches Sunday after suffering a left shin contusion during Saturday’s game against the Athletics. Although X-rays confirmed there was no fracture, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza indicated that Siri was struggling to put weight on his leg. “He’s in pain,” Mendoza said prior to the series finale against Oakland. A potential stint on the injured list is being considered as the team awaits updates on Siri’s condition.

Tyrone Taylor, who filled in for Siri, started at center field as the Mets faced the Athletics. The team, dealing with injuries, still boasts a deep outfield with options like Starling Marte, Jesse Winker, and Luisangel Acuña. Siri’s offensive struggles have been evident this season, hitting just .050/.208/.100, yet he is valued for his defensive skills and speed on the bases.

Mendoza also hinted at the possibility of a sixth starter being used in the upcoming home series against the Cardinals, which begins Thursday. This decision aims to give Kodai Senga some rest amidst a grueling stretch of 13 consecutive games. Team officials are deliberating between José Ureña and Justin Hagenman from Triple-A Syracuse for the additional start, alongside prospects Brandon Sproat and Blade Tidwell.

In Saturday’s game, the Mets fell short in a 3-1 defeat against the A’s, with Pete Alonso struggling at the plate, finishing hitless in four at-bats. The Mets have now recorded five losses this season, each resulting in two runs or fewer. “Right now, Pete is pretty much the one carrying us… we have got a good offense and they will come through,” Mendoza commented.

David Peterson pitched six solid innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out five batters. Despite performing well, the Mets faced challenges at the plate, stranding multiple runners. Brandon Nimmo provided a highlight with his fourth homer of the season, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win.

In a comeback performance on Sunday, the Mets secured an 8-0 victory, propelled by outstanding pitching from Kodai Senga and contributions from catcher Luis Torrens, who recorded two RBIs. “I feel great throwing to him… I think it’s going to continue to get better,” Senga said after completing seven scoreless innings.

Torrens, stepping up as the primary catcher during Francisco Alvarez’s injury, demonstrated his hitting prowess with a .333 batting average so far this season. His timely hit against starter Luis Severino put the Mets on the board first. The victory marked an improvement in the Mets’ offensive showing, particularly in the late innings where they capitalized on defensive mistakes by the A’s.

As the Mets regroup after a challenging stretch, Mendoza’s management of player workloads and potential injury adjustments will prove critical in maintaining team performance. The Mets are looking to build momentum with this victory as they prepare for upcoming challenges ahead.
