Mets’ Winker Departs Game with Injury in Doubleheader Against Cardinals

NEW YORK CITY, New York – New York Mets designated hitter Jesse Winker left the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals in the fourth inning due to discomfort on his right side. The injury likely occurred during his only significant defensive play in the third inning when he caught a sacrifice fly from Nolan Gorman and attempted to throw out Brendan Donovan at home plate.
Jeff McNeil, who plays second base, moved to left field after Winker’s exit. Luisangel Acuna transitioned from third base to second, while Mark Vientos entered the game at third. This marked Winker’s first start in left field this season, as he had previously only played two innings defensively, sharing designated hitter duties with Staring Marte.
This season, Winker has a batting average of .239 and a .734 OPS, along with one home run and nine RBIs across 23 games. The Mets have already faced challenges in their outfield depth with Jose Siri currently on the injured list due to a broken leg. However, players like Brandon Nimmo, Jose Azocar, and McNeil offer some support in the outfield.
If Winker is sidelined for an extended period, Marte is expected to handle most designated hitter at-bats, while Nimmo would provide a left-handed option, as he did during the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader.
