Jonathan Loáisiga Pitching For The Yankees

The New York Mets are once again eyeing a former New York Yankees player, this time setting their sights on right-handed reliever Jonathan Loáisiga. Following the recent signings of former Yankees Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes, as well as superstar outfielder Juan Soto, the Mets are now in talks with Loáisiga, according to sources.

Loáisiga, 30, had a truncated 2024 season due to a torn UCL in his right elbow, which required surgery in April. Despite his limited appearances, he managed to toss four shutout innings for the Yankees this year. His career statistics include a 3.44 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 207 strikeouts over seven seasons with the Yankees.

The Mets are not alone in their interest; the Yankees, San Diego Padres, and Texas Rangers are also vying for Loáisiga’s services. His appeal lies in his strong performance, particularly his sinker, which he has thrown 39% of the time in his career and can reach speeds of up to 98 mph. In his standout 2021 season, Loáisiga went 9-4 with a 2.17 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP, striking out 69 in 70.2 innings.

Loáisiga’s connection to Mets bench coach Carlos Mendoza, with whom he worked during his time with the Yankees, is seen as an additional advantage. The Mets’ general manager, David Stearns, is known to favor low-buy, high-ceiling bullpen arms, making Loáisiga an attractive option.
