Mexican Soccer’s Clausura 2025 Kicks Off with América Eyeing Historic Fourth Title
The Mexican soccer league’s Clausura 2025 tournament begins Friday, with defending champions América aiming for an unprecedented fourth consecutive title. América, which secured its 16th league championship in December by defeating Monterrey 3-2 in the Apertura final, is the most successful club in Mexican soccer history. The team is now chasing a tetracampeonato, a feat no club has achieved since the introduction of short tournaments in 1996.
América will open the tournament with a match against Querétaro, which has hired new coach Benjamín Mora to improve its performance after finishing near the bottom of the table last season. ‘We are hungry for more. This magical moment continues, and we are determined to keep writing history,’ said América’s Brazilian coach André Jardine in a video released by the club.
Other opening-day matches include Mazatlán vs. Bravos Ciudad Juárez and Tijuana vs. Toluca. Meanwhile, Guadalajara‘s ‘Chivas,’ one of América’s fiercest rivals, will seek to end an eight-year title drought under new Spanish coach Óscar García and the return of striker Alan Pulido. ‘I want to make 40 million fans happy. This team represents passion, identity, and ambition,’ García said during his presentation.
Chivas, known for fielding only Mexican players, will face Santos Laguna on Saturday. The team’s return to prominence is a key storyline this season, as is the rivalry between Cruz Azul and Chivas, which will feature a highly anticipated match on March 29. The Clausura 2025 promises intense competition, with América leading the charge for history.
