Mexico’s Group Determined for 2025 Gold Cup Following Exciting Draw

HOUSTON, Texas — Mexico‘s national soccer team now knows its opponents for the upcoming 2025 Gold Cup following a draw held on April 10, 2025. The event took place at NRG Stadium in Houston, where the teams were allocated into groups for the tournament, which runs from June 14 to July 6.
As the defending champion and top seed of Group A, Mexico will kick off its campaign against Costa Rica, Suriname, and the Dominican Republic. This draw sets a favorable path for the Tricolor, avoiding a potentially daunting matchup with the invited team, Saudi Arabia.
“We’re optimistic about our group. Costa Rica is always a tough opponent, but overall, we’re in a good position heading into the tournament,” said Javier Aguirre, head coach of the Mexican team.
The draw did not produce a clear “Group of Death,” although Group B, featuring Canada, Honduras, El Salvador, and Curacao, appears competitive. The remaining groups consist of Panama, Jamaica, Guatemala, Guadalupe in Group C, and the United States, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, and Saudi Arabia in Group D.
The Gold Cup’s format allows for the top two teams from each group, alongside the top four third-placed teams, to progress to the knockout stage. The quarterfinals are scheduled for June 28 and 29, with the semifinals following on July 2. The final will be held at NRG Stadium on July 6.
The tournament promises to showcase top talent, and it will also serve as a preparatory event for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
Notable attendees at the draw included legendary players Jorge Campos from Mexico, Marcelo Balboa from the United States, Dwayne De Rosario from Canada, and Blas Pérez from Panama. Campos is particularly excited about Mexico’s prospects, stating, “We have a strong team, and I believe we can bring the trophy home again.”
This year marks the first participation for Saudi Arabia in the Gold Cup, which adds a new dynamic to the tournament. The inclusion of teams from outside North America indicates growth for the tournament’s reputation on the international stage.
The excitement is palpable among fans and players alike, as teams finalize their rosters and strategies in anticipation of this prestigious event. Fans can catch all the action live on leading sports networks including ESPN, as well as through streaming platforms.
Fans can expect a thrilling tournament that not only highlights regional soccer talent but also pushes the envelope as teams prepare for future international competitions.
