Mexico’s Women Focus on Future in Upcoming Pinatar Cup Matches

Hermosillo, Mexico — The Mexican women’s national soccer team is gearing up for the Pinatar Cup with a roster of 22 players from Liga MX Femenil, head coach Pedro López stated on Tuesday. This strategic selection is aimed at identifying athletes who can develop over the next two years ahead of the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
López emphasized the importance of maintaining a competitive rhythm, noting, “I would like to have players who can sustain that rhythm and show their potential over the next two years, especially as we prepare for crucial qualifying matches and the World Cup.” His comments highlight the exclusion of Charlyn Corral, a prominent scorer in the Mexican league.
In his first call-up for 2025, López expressed pride in relying on local talent, stating, “We must be grateful for Liga MX Femenil. It raises the competitive level, and Mexico has the resources to retain its players. Although many deserving players are not on this list, the majority are competing in Liga MX.”
Recently, it was announced that the Mexican women’s national team will undergo restructuring at the youth levels, which now include a U-23 category. López believes this will provide a platform for players who are not yet ready for the senior squad to gain experience in international tournaments.
“The entire coaching staff works collaboratively across all levels, which is one of the most rewarding aspects. We are enriching our experience with professionals eager to grow. The U-23 category offers solutions for those players who have yet to find their place in the senior team,” he said.
The upcoming tournament will take place in Spain, where Mexico is set to face Canada, China, and Chinese Taipei. Mexico’s debut is scheduled for Wednesday, February 19, at 6 AM Central Mexico Time against Chinese Taipei. The team will then play Canada on Saturday, February 22, at 12 PM and conclude the group stage against China on Tuesday, February 25.
López further remarked, “Every match and tournament we participate in challenges us to improve. There is much to learn, and we view this as an opportunity for growth. Chinese Taipei is a competent team, while Canada is among the top 10 in the world, and China has a strong profile.” He added that his intention is to build a reliable team that doesn’t rely on individual talents but instead enhances collective tactical skills.
