Miami Dolphins Part Ways with Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio
The Miami Dolphins have announced that they will be parting ways with their defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio, following the conclusion of the 2023 season. The decision was reached mutually between the Dolphins organization and Fangio.
Head coach Mike McDaniel expressed his gratitude for Fangio’s contributions during the 2023 season, and stated that after assessing the team’s performance, it became apparent that parting ways was the best course of action for all parties involved.
The focus now shifts to the future as the Dolphins urgently search for the best candidate to lead their defense in 2024 and beyond. The organization remains committed to player development and building a winning team with sustained success.
Vic Fangio joined the Dolphins as the highest-paid defensive coordinator in the NFL last year. Although it took some time for his defensive scheme to take hold, the team showed improvement, ranking seventh in defensive expected points added from Week 8 to Week 18. This coincided with the return of All-Pro cornerback X.
The Dolphins’ defense allowed the 10th-most yards per game this season, compared to their 18th-place ranking in the previous year. However, they were third in the league in sacks, totaling 56. They did face challenges in the form of injuries, with key starters and backups missing crucial games.
This will mark the third defensive coordinator change in as many seasons for Head Coach Mike McDaniel, who took over from Josh Boyer in 2022.
