Michael Porter Jr. Denver Nuggets Game Action

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Michael Porter Jr. returned to the court Monday night after a two-game absence due to a hamstring strain, contributing significantly to the Denver Nuggets‘ 125-116 victory over the Indiana Pacers.

Porter, who had missed the Nuggets’ last three games leading up to the All-Star break, made a statement with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists in the game. He cited a need to maintain his fitness during the break, humorously acknowledging he found it ‘probably too relaxing’ after his injury.

“I think I probably was a little bit too relaxed and probably should have tried to do some more running over the break,” Porter said in a post-game interview.

Prior to his injury, Porter had an impressive streak, playing in 165 of 166 games since the start of the Nuggets’ 2023 playoff run. His recent performances indicate he is slowly regaining form, even as he grapples with his shooting precision following the layoff.

“It doesn’t surprise me. I’ve been through a lot with past injuries, but I still can do that,” Porter remarked about his ability to perform after the time off.

After struggling with shooting—hitting only 28% against the Charlotte Hornets and Los Angeles Lakers in previous games—the 6-foot-10 forward showcased his athleticism, including a highlight dunk over Pacers players Myles Turner and Tyrese Haliburton.

Despite this burst of energy, Porter has found his three-point shooting to be a challenge since returning from injury. He is currently 1 for 10 from beyond the arc, a stark contrast to his performance last season when he shot 44% from three in the first 15 games post-All-Star.

Porter reflected on the challenges of shooting after a break, recalling, “I think I was a little hesitant the first couple games back from the break, but every game I’m feeling more comfortable.”

The Nuggets, now 37-19, are riding a nine-game winning streak, matching their best stretch from the previous season. This victory not only solidified their momentum but also boosted their standings in the Western Conference.

Nuggets coach Michael Malone expressed confidence in Porter’s recovery, adding, “Every game is gonna keep on improving.”

Looking ahead, the team will face the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday, marking a significant matchup against new Laker Luka Doncic. For Porter, the focus remains on building stamina and perfecting his shot.

As for the break, Porter kept his vacation plans under wraps with a smile, saying, “It’s a secret location.”
