Al Michaels Plans to Return for 40th NFL Season in 2025
Legendary NFL broadcaster Al Michaels announced his intention to return for the 2025 NFL season, marking his 40th year calling prime-time games. Michaels, who currently works with Amazon Prime Video, shared his plans during an interview on the “Sports Media Podcast” this week, stating that Amazon management supports his return.
“I am leaning very heavily in that direction, yes,” Michaels said. “I want to make sure, No. 1, I’m healthy enough, which I am right now. I want to make sure I still have the passion for it, and I know I do. Those two factors are key.” Michaels, 80, emphasized his love for the job and the camaraderie with his colleagues, including Kirk Herbstreit and Kaylee Hartung.
Michaels’ storied career includes calling 11 Super Bowls, tying him with Pat Summerall for the most play-by-play assignments for the event. He also called iconic moments like the 1980 Winter Olympics and the 1989 World Series. Despite some criticism from fans about his recent performances, Michaels remains committed to delivering high-quality broadcasts. “I still get excited walking into a stadium. I still love to do what I do. So, why walk away?” he said.
Amazon Prime Video’s NFL coverage has seen significant success, with its “Thursday Night Football” games averaging 14.23 million viewers this season. The Dec. 5 game between the Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks drew a peak audience of 20.29 million viewers, making it one of the most-watched games of the season. Michaels will call the wild-card playoff game between the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens this Saturday, Amazon’s first-ever NFL playoff broadcast.
Michaels also praised Tom Brady‘s transition to broadcasting, calling him a “very good” analyst who has improved over time. “Knowing Tom, as I have through the years as a player and as a friend, he is going to work his ass off,” Michaels said. “He knows enough ways to figure out what’s going on.”
As Michaels prepares for another season, his legacy as one of the most iconic voices in sports broadcasting remains unmatched. With Amazon’s support and his enduring passion for the game, fans can expect to hear his voice in the booth for at least one more year.
