Michigan State Advances to Elite Eight with Win Over Mississippi

ATLANTA — Michigan State University’s basketball team secured a thrilling victory against the University of Mississippi, 73-70, during the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament on March 28, 2025, at State Farm Arena, marking their first step toward the Elite Eight.
The Spartans, who improved to 30-6 for the season, were led by Coen Carr, who made his first career start. Carr played a vital role, scoring 15 points, including six crucial points to start the second half that helped the Spartans regain momentum.
“It felt great to finally have my family here to support me,” said Carr, whose relatives had not seen him play since high school. “I wanted to make them proud, and I knew we had to fight for this win.”
As the game unfolded, the Spartans trailed 33-31 at halftime. However, Carr quickly leveled the score with a dunk right out of the gate in the second half. Despite a spirited response from the Rebels, Michigan State’s defense and accurate shooting helped them stay in contention.
Center Carson Cooper, who also made significant contributions with offensive rebounds and timely baskets, highlighted the team’s perseverance. “We faced some tough moments, but we stuck together and never lost faith,” Cooper said.
Mississippi led for much of the second half, including a 48-39 advantage at one point, thanks to Malik Dia’s strong performance. However, Michigan State responded with an energized defense, spurred by Jeremy Fears Jr. and Jase Richardson, who kept scoring to tie on several occasions.
With just under eight minutes to play, Cooper tied the game before Frankie Fidler’s layup gave the Spartans a 53-50 lead. This prompted a back-and-forth scoring battle in the closing minutes, showcasing high-pressure plays from both teams.
Richardson scored a pivotal layup with three minutes remaining, pushing Michigan State ahead once more. After exchanging baskets, Holloman sealed the win with free throws in the final seconds, preserving a hard-fought victory for the Spartans.
“We’ve been there before, and experience matters in these tight games,” said head coach Tom Izzo. “I’m proud of how they held their ground under pressure.”
Michigan State will face off against top-seeded Auburn, who defeated Michigan 78-65, in the Elite Eight on Sunday night at 9:39 p.m. The Spartans last reached the Elite Eight in 2019, where they finished as one of the Final Four teams in the tournament.
