Michigan’s Dusty May Signs Multi-Year Contract Extension

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan announced on February 21 that Dusty May, the David and Meredith Kaplan Men’s Basketball Head Coach, has reached a multi-year contract extension with the Wolverines program.
“I am excited to announce that Dusty and I have agreed to a new multi-year contract,” said Warde Manuel, Michigan’s Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics. “His commitment to this University and the success of the men’s basketball program has far exceeded our expectations, which makes us all excited for what the future holds.”
May expressed gratitude to Manuel, U-M President Santa Ono, and the Board of Regents for their support. “My goal is to bring continued success to this historic program,” said May. “We have built a solid foundation; however, there is much more work to be done. I am excited for the challenges ahead.”
Under May’s leadership, the Wolverines have achieved their first 20-win season in four years with a current 12-2 Big Ten record. They are contending for the Big Ten regular-season championship and aiming for a double bye in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament.
Ono added his enthusiasm about May’s long-term commitment, saying, “I am thrilled that Dusty will be with us long-term. I want to thank Warde for his outstanding leadership and for getting this done.”
May, who was named Michigan’s head coach on March 24, 2024, previously led Florida Atlantic for six seasons, where he compiled a record of 126-69 and took the Owls to the NCAA Final Four in 2023.
This season, the Wolverines stand at 20-5 overall, currently ranked 12th, as they prepare to face Michigan State later tonight in a crucial rivalry match. If they win, it would cap off a significant day for May, who has also been named to the Watch List for the Werner Ladder Naismith Men’s College Coach of the Year.
Before the announcement, there was speculation about May’s potential interest in Indiana‘s head coaching vacancy after Mike Woodson’s resignation. However, May emphasized his commitment to Michigan, stating, “This place is my foundation, but I’m very, very happy at the University of Michigan.”
