No. 1 Michigan State Faces No. 10 Michigan in Hockey Rivalry Rematch
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The No. 10 Michigan Wolverines and No. 1 Michigan State Spartans will renew their storied hockey rivalry this weekend in a highly anticipated two-game series. The action begins Friday, Jan. 17, 2025, at 7 p.m. ET at Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, followed by a rematch Saturday, Jan. 18, at 7:30 p.m. ET at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing.
The Spartans (18-2-2) enter the series as the top-ranked team in NCAA Men’s Hockey, seeking redemption after being eliminated by Michigan in the 2024 tournament. Michigan State has been dominant this season, boasting one of the best records in college hockey. Meanwhile, the Wolverines (13-8-1, 7-5 Big Ten) have struggled with consistency, splitting their last three series against Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Wisconsin.
Michigan State head coach Adam Nightingale emphasized the importance of the rivalry. “These games are always intense,” Nightingale said. “Michigan is a talented team, and we know they’ll bring their best. We’re focused on playing our game and staying disciplined.”
Michigan, led by head coach Brandon Naurato, is looking to build momentum as the season progresses. “We’ve had some ups and downs, but this is a great opportunity to prove ourselves against the best,” Naurato said. “Our guys are excited for the challenge.”
Both games will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network, with streaming available through the network’s app. The series marks the first time the two teams have met since Michigan’s tournament victory last season, adding extra intensity to the matchup.
Fans are expected to pack both arenas, with Yost Ice Arena’s iconic student section and Munn Ice Arena’s passionate crowd creating an electric atmosphere. The rivalry, one of the most storied in college hockey, dates back decades and has produced countless memorable moments.
Michigan State’s offense, led by standout forward Isaac Howard, will face a tough test against Michigan’s defense, anchored by goaltender Jake Barczewski. The Wolverines will rely on their top scorer, Rutger McGroarty, to challenge the Spartans’ defensive unit.
With playoff implications on the line, this weekend’s series could have a significant impact on both teams’ postseason aspirations. Michigan State aims to solidify its position as the nation’s top team, while Michigan looks to climb the rankings and build confidence for the stretch run.
