Michigan Residents Face Closures on Martin Luther King Jr. Day
DETROIT, Mich. — With Martin Luther King Jr. Day falling on a Monday this year, Michigan residents planning to run errands or conduct business may encounter closures across federal and state institutions. The federal holiday, honoring the late civil rights icon, will see most government offices and services shut down, while many private businesses remain open.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday, meaning all federal offices, including courts, post offices, and social security offices, will be closed. State offices, such as the Michigan Secretary of State, will also be shut, and state employees will have the day off. Local government offices, including courts, will follow suit, though emergency services like fire departments, police, and ambulances will remain staffed.
Post offices will not operate, and mail delivery will be suspended for the day. However, most grocery stores in Michigan will maintain regular hours, providing residents with access to essential services.
Public schools and colleges across the state will be closed in observance of the holiday. Most banks will also close, though ATMs and digital banking services will remain available. Amazon delivery services will be paused, but FedEx will operate with modified services, and UPS stores may have varying hours.
Residents are encouraged to check with local businesses and service providers for specific hours of operation. For further inquiries, contact Jenna Prestininzi at the Detroit Free Press.
