Michigan State Secures 71-63 Victory Over New Mexico in NCAA Tournament

CLEVELAND (AP) — Michigan State University advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament after defeating New Mexico 71-63 on March 23, 2025. Jaden Akins led the Spartans with 16 points, including a crucial three-pointer that put Michigan State ahead for good in the second round matchup.
Coach Tom Izzo‘s team demonstrated poise and depth, marking the 16th time under his leadership that the Spartans have reached this round. Izzo now has 58 NCAA Tournament wins, tying him for fourth in all-time coaching victories.
The Spartans, seeded second in the tournament, will face sixth-seeded Mississippi in the South Region semifinal on Friday in Atlanta. Tre Holloman contributed 14 points to the victory, helping to ensure Michigan State’s progression to the next stage.
“The first half of the game was a barrage from New Mexico. It felt as though we weren’t guarding well and they were making all their shots,” said Izzo. “However, our defense improved as the game progressed, and we rebounded effectively.”
New Mexico, seeded tenth, enjoyed a strong performance from Nelly Junior Joseph, who led his team with 16 points. Mustapha Amzil and Donovan Dent added 14 points each, but New Mexico has struggled historically, as they remain winless in second-round games since the tournament expanded in 1985.
“Michigan State is a tough, athletic team,” stated New Mexico coach Richard Pitino. “We knew we had to battle hard as they would make us earn every single point.”
The Lobos led 31-29 at halftime, but Michigan State surged at the start of the second half with six consecutive points. The game remained tightly contested until a three-pointer from Akins shifted the momentum and led to a key scoring stretch for the Spartans.
In a display of tough defense, Michigan State held New Mexico scoreless for nearly five minutes during critical moments of the game. With Joseph fouled out late in the second half, the Spartans capitalized, with freshman Jase Richardson scoring three free throws to secure the victory.
“I’m thrilled with the win,” said Izzo. “It shows our character, especially after being down and not playing our best.”
As the Spartans prepare for their next challenge, they carry with them the momentum and resolve needed for a deep tournament run, with their sights set on their first Elite Eight appearance since 2019.
