Michigan Wolverines Advance to Championship After Dominating Auburn
LAS VEGAS — The University of Michigan Wolverines continued their impressive run in the Players Era Championship, defeating No. 21 Auburn 102-72 on Tuesday night at Michelob Ultra Arena. With this victory, Michigan secured a spot in the title game against Gonzaga, which will take place on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. ET.
Ranked No. 7 in the country, the Wolverines showcased their strength, shooting 52% from the field and making 14 3-pointers. The team, which improved to 6-0 this season, built a significant lead of at least 20 points for the final 24 minutes of the game.
The win served as a measure of revenge for Michigan players after losing to Auburn in last season’s Sweet 16. Yaxel Lendeborg and Roddy Gayle Jr. led the charge, each scoring 17 points. The Wolverines benefitted from a balanced attack, as six players scored in double figures.
Michigan’s defense remained a focal point throughout the game, limiting Auburn to just 36% shooting and allowing only three assists on 22 made baskets. Coach Dusty May praised his team’s efforts, noting, “Their switching bothered us. They did a good job of being disruptive.”
Auburn’s struggles continued when it came to free throws, as the Tigers made only 18 of 33 attempts. Michigan’s aggressive play on both ends of the court contributed to their commanding victory.
The Wolverines previously defeated San Diego State 94-54, ensuring they entered the championship game with a maximum victory margin cap of 40 points. The championship matchup will be a challenging test, as they face a strong Gonzaga team that is also unbeaten this season.
Looking ahead, the excitement is palpable among Michigan players. Lendeborg expressed motivation beyond basketball, saying, “I want to try to give my mom a car for Christmas,” a testament to the financial rewards at stake for the winning team.
