Mick Schumacher Confident of F1 Return, Eyes Alpine Seat for 2025 Season
Former Haas Formula 1 driver, Mick Schumacher, remains optimistic about his chances of making a comeback to the F1 grid, setting his sights on securing a seat with Alpine for the upcoming 2025 season.
Schumacher, who is the son of F1 legend Michael Schumacher, was dropped by Haas at the end of the 2022 season after a challenging campaign marked by more crashes than points. However, the German driver was picked up by Mercedes for a reserve driver role and simultaneously joined the World Endurance Championship with Alpine.
This strategic move led to Schumacher being granted a test opportunity in a previous-spec Alpine F1 car as part of the team’s development programme, where he impressed Alpine’s leadership, including Toto Wolff, who praised Schumacher’s performance alongside fellow driver Jack Doohan.
With the impending departure of Esteban Ocon from Alpine, the race for the second seat at the Enstone-based team for the 2025 season has intensified, with Schumacher vying against contenders like Carlos Sainz and Doohan, with the backing of Alpine special advisor Flavio Briatore and team boss Bruno Famin.
In an interview with AFP, Schumacher expressed his confidence in his Formula 1 prospects, stating, “It is important for me to return to Formula 1 to show what I can do. My chances in Formula 1 seem to be pretty good so far. At the moment, Formula 1 is within reach.”
Alpine, on the other hand, has remained tight-lipped about their driver lineup decision, with Famin emphasizing that the team is in no rush to finalize their selection. Famin asserted, “We are working on it. We take our time. We are in no hurry. We take the decision when we need to take the decision. We have no pressure on deciding quickly for the second driver.”
