Miguel Herrera Aims for Gold Cup Success with Costa Rica

San Diego, California — Miguel Herrera, the head coach of Costa Rica‘s national soccer team, is striving to replicate the success he found with Mexico a decade ago by winning the Gold Cup. Herrera led Mexico to victory in 2015, defeating Jamaica 3-1 in the final, a surprising appearance for the Caribbean team.
“Winning it is something monumental, and I have an extraordinary group to try to lift that trophy again. I am confident the players can do it, we will face whoever is in front of us to achieve it,” Herrera said during a press conference on Saturday ahead of the tournament.
Costa Rica is set to face Surinam on Sunday at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego in a Group A match that also includes Mexico and the Dominican Republic. “Our commitment is to win; we have a team capable of battling against anyone. It is in our hands to achieve this, and there are no excuses. Tomorrow is a very important match, and we are at 100%,” the Mexican coach added.
After the match with Surinam, Costa Rica, which was the runner-up in the 2002 Gold Cup, will play against the Dominican Republic on June 18, and close the group stage against Mexico on June 22. “We are all convinced that it can be done; as long as I see the team with that determination and commitment, I am sure we will succeed,” Herrera affirmed.
