Mikaela Shiffrin Makes History With 100th World Cup Victory

SESTRIERE, Italy (AP) — Mikaela Shiffrin cemented her status as the greatest in skiing history Sunday, winning her record-extending 100th World Cup race at the slalom event in Sestriere. Shiffrin’s victory came after a nearly flawless performance, where she achieved a season-best score of 148.36.
The American skied to a total of 222.38 points, surpassing her competitors and demonstrating her dominance in the sport. Her win at Sestriere fulfilled a personal milestone that had been put on hold following a serious crash in November.
“To reach 100 is something I’ve dreamt of since I was a kid. I never imagined I would get here, and it feels surreal,” said Shiffrin after her win. As she stood atop the podium, her emotions were palpable, a mix of pride and disbelief at her extraordinary achievement.
Shiffrin, who is a two-time Olympic champion, also tied the all-time record for 155 career podium finishes in World Cup races with this latest success, equalling Swedish skier Ingemar Stenmark’s long-standing record.
In the slalom race, Shiffrin led after her first run and successfully defended her lead in the second run, finishing 0.61 seconds ahead of Croatia’s Zrinka Ljutic. Ljutic, a three-time winner this season, took the silver, while Paula Moltzan, another American skier, claimed the bronze medal.
This momentous victory not only adds to Shiffrin’s legacy but also highlights her resilience and skill, proving that her place in skiing history is well-deserved. As she moves forward, the skiing community eagerly anticipates what more Shiffrin can achieve in her remarkable career.
