Mike Bibby Named Head Coach of Sacramento State Men’s Basketball

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Mike Bibby, a 14-year NBA veteran and former star guard for the Sacramento Kings, has been appointed as the head coach of Sacramento State‘s men’s basketball team, as reported by ESPN‘s Shams Charania on Monday.

The agreement was reached following negotiations between Bibby’s agent, Tyler Glass of CSE Talent, and university officials. The university is preparing for the opening of a new basketball facility next fall, signaling a fresh chapter for the Hornets’ athletics programs.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mike Bibby to Sacramento State as our new head coach,” said Sac State President Luke Wood, an alumnus and a dynamic leader known for his ambitious approach to enhancing the university’s athletics.

Bibby, who previously coached for six years at Shadow Mountain High School in Phoenix, Arizona, is credited with leading the school’s team to four consecutive state championships during his tenure (2013-2019). His remarkable high school coaching record indicates his ability to cultivate young talent.

“Returning to a school and community that means so much to me is truly special,” Bibby stated. “I look forward to building a competitive program at Sacramento State.”

Having played for the Vancouver Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings, Atlanta Hawks, New York Knicks, Miami Heat, and Washington Wizards, Bibby averaged 14.7 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.1 rebounds over his 1,001-game NBA career. His most notable years were with the Kings from 2001 to 2008, including a playoff appearance in 2002.

Securing Bibby, a player identified with Sacramento’s basketball legacy, is expected to revitalize a team that recently finished with a 7-25 record, placing last in the Big Sky Conference. His hiring could also fortify Sac State’s ambitions as it seeks a transition to NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision competition.
