Mike Conley Timberwolves Playoff Basketball

LOS ANGELES – Veteran point guard Mike Conley, 37, is battling through injuries this playoff season but is still performing at a high level. The Minnesota Timberwolves currently hold a 1-0 lead in the NBA Western Conference first-round series against the Los Angeles Lakers. Game 2 is set for Tuesday night at Crypto.com Arena.

Conley has been dealing with a left wrist injury that he admits will require surgery after his playing career. Despite the pain, he has stepped up for the Timberwolves as the playoffs began. “This season has been one of the toughest ones I’ve had to deal with,” Conley said. His struggles started early in the regular season, affecting his performance and leading to a slow start.

After a recent victory against Philadelphia, Conley spoke about the pressure of expectations this season. “A lot of expectation coming into the season after the year we had,” he reflected. His teammate, center Rudy Gobert, praised Conley’s competitive spirit, stating, “Mike is the oldest guy, but he’s the one that competes the hardest on a lot of plays.”

Conley averaged only 8.2 points per game this season and took fewer shot attempts as he focused on getting his teammates involved. However, he still shot 41% from three-point range, proving he can be a dangerous offensive weapon. His efforts on defense were equally notable, including a crucial steal from LeBron James in Game 1 against the Lakers.

This playoff run has not been without its challenges. Conley also dislocated a finger around the All-Star break and has had to manage multiple injuries throughout the season. He adjusted his playing time, sitting out parts of back-to-back games to preserve his health. Conley’s commitment to playing through pain has set an example for younger players on the team.

Teammate Anthony Edwards referred to Conley as a “warrior,” saying, “He still plays the game like it’s his first time playing it. He loves the game.” Edwards, who views Conley as a mentor, emphasizes the impact of Conley’s dedication on the entire team.

As the Timberwolves prepare for Game 2, the leadership and experience of Mike Conley will be vital as they continue their playoff journey against the Lakers.
