Milan San Remo 2025 Cycling Race

San Remo, Italy — As the iconic Milano-San Remo cycling race unfolds, a field of top athletes prepares to tackle the grueling 289-kilometer course, which promises to be both a test of endurance and strategy. Defending champions and cycling legends alike will face off on March 22, 2025, as they race from Pavia to the picturesque coastline of San Remo.

This year, the event features not only the prestigious men’s race but also the much-anticipated return of a women’s competition after a 20-year hiatus. Both races will conclude on the same iconic finish line, heightening the excitement for spectators and participants.

The men’s race boasts a lineup that includes top contenders like Tadej Pogacar, a two-time Tour de France champion. Despite his prowess, Pogacar has yet to clinch victory at Milan-San Remo, finishing in the top three in the past three editions. “Milano-San Remo is probably the race that will torment me for the longest time,” he reflected ahead of the race. With the Cipressa and Poggio climbs looming near the end, tactical decisions will be crucial.

During the early stages of the race, a breakaway of eight riders formed, including Alessandro Verre and Mathis Le Berre from Arkéa – B&B Hotels and Martin Marcellusi from VF Group – Bardiani CSF – Faizanè. As the race progressed, their lead varied drastically against the peloton, establishing a gap of 3 minutes, 45 seconds at the last check. With so much distance still to ride, the dynamics within the pack remained fluid.

While Pogacar is viewed as a primary favorite, he will face stiff competition from returning champions and emerging talents. Notably, Jasper Philipsen—last year’s winner—is expected to be a central figure in the peloton, supported by his teammate Mathieu Van der Poel. “We plan to be aggressive and take advantage of our strengths,” Van der Poel stated optimistically.

Racers must also contend with less than favorable weather, with cold and rainy conditions adding an element of unpredictability to the race strategy. Riders have been spotted preparing with rain jackets, highlighting the necessity of adaptability in such challenging weather.

The female race is set to follow a similar course, navigating the same iconic climbs that define the male counterpart, featuring contenders like Lotte Kopecky and Lorena Wiebes. With the stakes high on both ends, fans can expect an electrifying afternoon of competitive cycling.

As all cyclists gear up for the final climbs, one key question remains: who will find the strength to emerge victorious as they race towards the iconic finish line in San Remo? The answer will reveal itself in the final hectic kilometers of this classic showdown.
