Milan Skriniar Joins Fenerbahce, Spurs Miss Out on Defender
ISTANBUL, Turkey — Former Inter defender Milan Skriniar is set to join Turkish Super Lig side Fenerbahce from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), a move that has significant implications for multiple clubs across Europe. The 29-year-old Slovakian center-back is expected to arrive in Istanbul to finalize the deal and undergo medical tests, with Fenerbahce reportedly covering his €10 million-per-season salary.
Skriniar, who had been linked with Juventus, Napoli, and Tottenham Hotspur, will now join Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce on a permanent deal. The transfer effectively ends speculation about his potential moves to Serie A clubs and rules out a move for Serbian defender Strahinja Pavlovic, who had been considered as an alternative by Milan.
The move also impacts Juventus’ pursuit of PSG forward Randal Kolo Muani. The Bianconeri had been working on a loan deal for the French striker but are now unable to finalize the transfer due to PSG’s restrictions on loaning players to foreign clubs. Skriniar’s departure from PSG means the Parisian club must either sell or recall two players to comply with regulations, complicating the situation further.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur missed out on Skriniar after Fenerbahce secured the defender with a permanent offer, outbidding Spurs, Napoli, and Galatasaray, who were only willing to pursue loan deals. Turkish journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu confirmed the agreement on social media, posting a photo of Skriniar en route to Istanbul with a Fenerbahce shirt. Fabrizio Romano, a prominent transfer expert, added that Fenerbahce had won the race for the defender’s signature.
Skriniar’s defensive prowess is well-documented, having been a standout performer during his time at Inter Milan. However, his lack of pace and mobility raised concerns about his suitability for Tottenham’s high defensive line under manager Ange Postecoglou. Spurs were reportedly only willing to pursue a loan deal, avoiding the risk of a long-term commitment to a player who may not fit their tactical system.
With Skriniar now off the market, Tottenham are exploring other defensive options, including Tosin Adarabioyo, Fikayo Tomori, and Jarrad Branthwaite. The ripple effects of Skriniar’s transfer continue to shape the January transfer window, with PSG needing to resolve their squad balance and multiple clubs adjusting their strategies.
