EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have secured safety Theo Jackson with a three-year contract extension, team officials announced Thursday. The deal, reported to be worth $12.615 million, includes full guarantees for the first two years and is set to run through the 2027 season.

Jackson, originally drafted in the sixth round by the Tennessee Titans in 2022, joined the Vikings from their practice squad in October of that year. Since then, he has become a reliable backup and standout special teams player, participating in all 17 regular-season games in 2024.

“Honestly, it means everything because the hard work that I’ve put in is finally paying off,” Jackson said, reflecting on his recent contract signing during a ceremony at Twin Cities Orthopedics Performance Center, where he was joined by his wife, Ariel, and their newborn son, Aaro.

Over his tenure with the Vikings, Jackson has accumulated 28 tackles, two interceptions, and three passes defended over 43 games. In a thrilling Week 16 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, Jackson sealed a 27-24 victory with a crucial interception of quarterback Geno Smith, a pivotal moment that showcased his capability on the field.

Jackson’s success has come against a backdrop of uncertainty in Minnesota’s safety positions, as current starters Harrison Smith and Cam Bynum are set to become unrestricted free agents. Smith, at age 36, faces a significant decision about continuing his career, while Bynum could become too costly for the Vikings if he enters free agency.

“Football and everything we do here is a business, but I’m glad that the friendships I’ve made here can last outside of the game,” Jackson added, emphasizing the camaraderie he’s experienced within the organization.

In addition to his defensive contributions, Jackson has established himself as a key player on special teams, logging 875 snaps and contributing 19 tackles. Head coach Brian Flores has noted the integral role of versatile players like Jackson as they navigate the potential changes in the roster.

As Jackson prepares for the upcoming NFL season, his ambitions are clear: to build upon his previous performances and further his impact on the Vikings’ defense. The Vikings, who led the NFL in interceptions last season with 24, are banking on Jackson to step forward as a larger part of their game plan moving forward.
