BOSTONMitchell Robinson‘s influence on the New York Knicks was evident in their Game 1 victory against the Boston Celtics on May 7, 2025. Despite making only 3 of 10 free throws, Robinson’s presence on the court prompted Boston to employ a strategy known as ‘Hack-A-Mitch,’ intended to limit his minutes and reduce his impact.

In the first round matchup against the Detroit Pistons, Robinson showcased his value by grabbing rebounds and blocking shots, contributing significantly to the Knicks’ fast-paced play. However, Pistons’ head coach J.B. Bickerstaff chose to foul Robinson repeatedly, a tactical decision that proved successful in a game where Robinson shot just 3 of 7 from the free-throw line.

Robinson’s shortcomings at the charity stripe did not go unnoticed by Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau, who acknowledged the need to balance Robinson’s defensive strengths against his inconsistent free-throw shooting. ‘They’re trying to get him off the floor. He gives us the ability to switch more but also rim protect and rebound,’ Thibodeau said.

Robinson, 24, missed the majority of the 2024 season due to foot and ankle injuries, making his season debut only in March. His limited time affected the Knicks’ defense, as they often lacked a strong rim protector. Despite his struggles, this season marked Robinson’s best free-throw percentage, nearing 70 percent over 17 games.

‘He knows how important he is to this team,’ Knicks guard Josh Hart said. ‘Even if he makes one out of two, we could be a plus-5. We have faith in him on both sides of the court.’

The tactic of fouling Robinson reflects a deep respect for his defensive capabilities. However, it also places pressure on him to improve at the line. As the playoffs continue, Robinson’s ability to convert free throws may be critical to the Knicks’ success.

‘Fouling Robinson is the ultimate sign of respect,’ Thibodeau emphasized, hinting at the ongoing dilemma facing the Knicks as they navigate the postseason while relying on their key player.
