MLB Teams Face Challenges as 2025 Season Approaches Quarter Mark

BALTIMORE, Md. — As the 2025 MLB season hits its quarter mark, several teams are beginning to find their rhythm while others struggle to keep up. FOX Sports’ MLB reporters Rowan Kavner and Deesha Thosar analyzed the key developments shaping the early season.
One team facing significant challenges is the Baltimore Orioles, currently at the bottom of the AL East. General Manager Mike Elias acknowledged the issues in the starting rotation, which have left them with one of the worst run differentials in the American League. ‘Hope and pray their underperforming veterans magically perform better?’ Kavner suggested as one potential option. The Orioles may also need to look for trades as the deadline approaches, particularly to shore up their pitching.
Meanwhile, the St. Louis Cardinals and Minnesota Twins have sparked interest with their recent winning streaks. The Cardinals have won eight consecutive games, pushing their record above .500 for the first time this season. Thosar believes St. Louis is on a clearer path to contention in the weaker NL Central. In contrast, the Twins have demonstrated inconsistency, making their hot streak less convincing.
Another standout performance comes from Freddie Freeman of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who is leading the National League in several batting categories, including average and OPS. Despite some concerns about his ankle injury, Kavner predicts Freeman could reach 3,000 hits and secure a place in the Hall of Fame if he can maintain his health.
In an exciting move, the Arizona Diamondbacks called up top prospect Jordan Lawlar, who brings impressive minor league stats with a .336 average and 13 home runs. Kavner noted that Lawlar’s versatility could help boost the D-backs’ offense, especially against left-handed pitching.
Finally, excitement is building for Team USA’s participation in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, with players like Aaron Judge and Paul Skenes confirmed to join. Kavner mentioned several intriguing candidates for first-time participation, including Bryce Harper and Jacob deGrom, both of whom have proven track records.
