MLB Trade Market Heats Up: Nolan Arenado, Luis Castillo Among Top Targets
As the 2025 MLB offseason enters its final stretch, the trade market is heating up with several big names still in play. Nolan Arenado, Luis Castillo, and other high-profile players remain available, with teams scrambling to finalize their rosters before spring training begins. The St. Louis Cardinals, Seattle Mariners, and other clubs are actively exploring deals to reshape their lineups and pitching staffs.
Nolan Arenado, the nine-time All-Star third baseman, is at the center of trade discussions. Despite his declining offensive numbers, Arenado’s defensive prowess and veteran leadership make him an attractive target for teams in need of a reliable infielder. However, his hefty contract—$64 million over the next three years—and full no-trade clause have complicated negotiations. The Cardinals, who are in a “reset” phase, are reportedly willing to eat a portion of his salary to facilitate a deal.
Luis Castillo, the Mariners’ ace, is another player generating significant interest. Castillo, who is owed $22.75 million annually for the next three years, could be moved as Seattle looks to clear payroll and address offensive needs. The New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and other contenders are seen as potential landing spots for the right-handed pitcher.
Other notable players on the trade block include Sonny Gray of the Cardinals, Jordan Montgomery of the Diamondbacks, and Luis Arraez of the Padres. Gray, who is owed $65 million over the next two years, could provide a boost to a contender’s rotation, while Montgomery’s one-year, $22.5 million contract makes him a low-risk, high-reward option for teams in need of pitching depth.
The Padres, meanwhile, are looking to shed salary after exceeding the competitive balance tax threshold. Trading Arraez or Dylan Cease could help them achieve that goal while also bringing back valuable prospects. Cease, in particular, is seen as a prime target for teams like the Houston Astros and Baltimore Orioles, who are in win-now mode.
As the offseason progresses, the trade market is expected to remain active, with several blockbuster deals still possible. Teams like the Yankees, Dodgers, and Red Sox are likely to be major players as they look to solidify their rosters for the 2025 season.
