MLB Watchability Index: Dodgers Top List, Pirates Plummet to 26th

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – ESPN released its annual MLB Watchability Index on Monday, showcasing how the landscape of fan interest fluctuates among the league’s teams. The Los Angeles Dodgers secured the top position, while the Pittsburgh Pirates fell significantly to 26th place, marking a drop from last year’s optimistic rank of 10.
The Watchability Index assesses teams based on five main categories: star power, young talent, baserunning, defense, and overall minutiae, which include aspects like ballparks and mascots. The maximum possible score is 40, along with potential bonus points that writers can apply at their discretion. The Dodgers earned the number one rank due to their exceptional star power and elite pitching lineup.
The Pirates, who previously enjoyed a peek into the spotlight following a 9-2 start to the 2024 season, now find themselves in a troubling situation. ESPN’s ranking noted that despite ace Paul Skenes providing some excitement — particularly every fifth day he takes the mound — the overall team struggles make for a lackluster viewing experience. Their score reflects this: “The Pirates are watchable every fifth day when Skenes starts, but otherwise? I’ll pass,” the report states.
As of now, the Pirates sit at 5-11, struggling offensively with the league’s worst OPS of .578. Their batting average stands at a paltry .190, leaving them dangerously close to setting a record for modern-era futility.
The last-place Chicago White Sox, ranked 30th, shadow the Pirates, with a dismal season marked by poor performance and dwindling fan engagement as the team embarks on a lengthy rebuild.
Scoring for the Pirates included low marks in star power and youth talent. Following Sunday’s shutout loss to the Cincinnati Reds, the team continues to grapple with a lack of offensive firepower, solidifying their position at the bottom of the rankings across major hitting categories.
Despite the gloomy forecasts, hope is not lost. Tonight, fans will turn their attention as Skenes is set to pitch against the Reds with a first pitch slated for 6:40 PM ET. The fireballing ace remains a critical draw, offering a glimpse of potential amidst the uncertainty surrounding the rest of the team.
As early 2025 progresses, other teams around the league also see their watchability fluctuate, with the Boston Red Sox holding the second spot in the rankings, only slightly behind the Dodgers.
“This is going to be an entertaining team,” said MLB writer David Schoenfield, praising Red Sox’s young talent and established stars alike. Players like Kristian Campbell and Ceddanne Rafaela bring excitement for fans, regardless of the challenges that loom.
Fans will be watching closely as the season unfolds, eager to see if their teams can rise above limitations and engage audiences with memorable performances.
