Major League Rugby Mental Health Partnership Onrise

DALLAS – Major League Rugby (MLR) announced on Jan. 7, 2025, that Onrise will serve as the league’s Official Mental Health Provider. This groundbreaking partnership aims to provide comprehensive mental health care and support tailored specifically for athletes, including players, coaches, and referees. The initiative will offer peer support from retired athletes, therapy, psychiatric care, and 24/7 crisis services.

“Mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness in the sport of rugby, and the mental health of our players, coaches, and officials is paramount to our league’s success,” said MLR Chief Operating Officer Graeme Bradbury. He emphasized Onrise’s reputation in the professional sports space and the league’s commitment to expanding mental health resources for its community.

The partnership builds on MLR’s ongoing efforts to address mental health stigmas. In October, the league launched MLR Wellness, an initiative extending mental health offerings to players and fans. Since 2022, MLR has collaborated with LooseHeadz, an organization dedicated to placing mental health leads at rugby teams and providing resource toolkits. During the 2025 season, LooseHeadz and Onrise will work together to enhance these efforts.

Kim Quigley, MD, CEO of Onrise, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “Onrise is excited to be the Official Mental Health Provider of Major League Rugby. In a fast, physical game like rugby, players wear an armor of toughness. At Onrise, we want MLR athletes to know it’s ok to fortify that armor with tools to improve your mental wellbeing.”

The announcement also marks a significant alignment between MLR and the Major League Rugby Players’ Association (MLRPA). Chris Mattina, President of the MLRPA, highlighted the importance of mental health in athletes’ overall performance and quality of life. “Through Onrise’s expert services, we are providing our players real support that they need to thrive,” he said.

Onrise has a proven track record of supporting professional athletes, working with organizations such as Inter Miami FC, Major League Soccer Players' Association, USA Track & Field Athletes’ Commission, United Football League Players' Association, and the Professional Women's Hockey League.

This partnership underscores MLR’s commitment to prioritizing mental health and creating a supportive environment for its community. For more information on Onrise and LooseHeadz, visit their respective websites.
