MMA Icon Critiques Topuria’s Pursuit of Makhachev Matchup

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Former MMA title challenger Chael Sonnen expressed frustration Wednesday over Ilia Topuria‘s persistent calls for a fight against reigning lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. Topuria, a Spanish-Georgian fighter known as ‘El Matador,’ has made headlines by calling out Makhachev multiple times in recent weeks.
Since his knockout victory, Topuria has been vocal about wanting to face Makhachev in what he believes could be a highly anticipated matchup. However, Sonnen argued that the bout may not be beneficial for Makhachev’s career.
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Sonnen questioned, “Why is Ilia Topuria calling out Islam Makhachev for the eighth time in nine days? There is something highly unusual about Ilia Topuria using these opportunities to stay on Islam.” His comments highlight a growing concern within the MMA community about the viability of such a fight.
Sonnen pointed out that Makhachev had already fought a renowned 145-pounder, referencing his previous bout against Charles Oliveira, the current number one pound-for-pound fighter, saying, “It wouldn’t be special for Islam.” He further noted that Oliveira does not express interest in a rematch, stating, “Charles is not of the mindset of ‘Let’s fight Islam.’”
As the lightweight division struggles with depth, the viability of Makhachev facing Topuria remains in question. “There’s just nothing going on at 155,” Sonnen assessed, alluding to the stagnant nature of title contendership in the division.
While there is uncertainty over who Topuria might defend his title against next, an upcoming match featuring a powerful striker could potentially alter the landscape of the division. As anticipation builds for this intriguing matchup, many are keen to see how it will impact the championship scene.
