Mohammed Shami Denies Claims of Exclusion from Australia Tour
Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has refuted claims regarding doubts over his participation in the upcoming tour of Australia, labeling such reports as “baseless.” Discussions about Shami’s fitness emerged due to concerns over his recovery from an ankle injury, yet the cricketer assures fans that he is on the path to recovery. “Why these type of baseless rumors? I’m working hard and trying my level best to recover,” Shami expressed on social media platform X.
The rumors gained traction after a report by The Times of India suggested that Shami might miss the series due to a fresh knee problem, quoting an unnamed source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The source indicated, “Shami had resumed bowling and was looking to make a comeback to competitive cricket soon. But this knee injury has flared up recently.” However, Shami has dismissed this narrative, cautioning against believing reports that do not originate from him or the BCCI.
Shami, who has been sidelined since the 2023 ODI World Cup due to an ankle injury, underwent surgery earlier this year. His rehabilitation and return to form have been closely monitored by the BCCI’s medical team, with the seamer now aiming to participate in India’s home Test series against New Zealand. “Shami’s rehab is very much on track. New Zealand Tests are being kept as a realistic target,” a BCCI official explained.
Despite the challenges, Shami remains optimistic about his return to international cricket. The BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, where Shami has been training, continues to support his rehabilitation process. Shami, along with bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, is seen as a key component of India’s bowling strategy. In his career, Shami has been instrumental in India’s success in Australia, taking 31 wickets in eight Test matches.
The BCCI recently inaugurated the revamped National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, emphasizing the improvement of cricket infrastructure in India. As Shami continues his preparations, he remains a strong contender for selection in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia later this year.
