Montreal Alouettes Throwback Uniforms

On August 22, the Montreal Alouettes unveiled their 1974 throwback uniforms, which garnered significant attention. The game on Sunday night featured the Alouettes hosting the Edmonton Elks in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Montreal’s 1974 Grey Cup victory.

The Alouettes’ modern take on the 1974 uniform included certain elements that paid tribute to its heritage. Notably, the front and rear bumpers of the helmets were intentionally left blank to enhance the throwback aesthetic. The team added white socks with stripes, reminiscent of a later era, rather than the blue socks worn in 1974.

Wade Heidt, a contributor and Canadian University Uni Watcher, expressed his appreciation for the uniforms during the event. He noted the contrast of navy over white was visually appealing, particularly in comparison to their typical mono-navy attire. Furthermore, he highlighted the stylish white shoulder loops and the vibrant red sleeves that contributed to the uniform’s overall aesthetic.

During the game, broadcaster TSN opted to utilize the vintage “Delta” logo for their scorebug, further enhancing the nostalgic experience. However, a notable disappointment arose with the Edmonton Elks’ choice to wear green pants, as many believed yellow pants would have been more suitable to complement the theme.

The event also saw the presence of members from the 1974 Montreal Alouettes team, although their jerseys were not exact replicas of the original uniform. They sported royal blue jerseys which included television numbers and a sleeve logo, differentiating them from the throwback attire.
