Motorcycle Racing Legend Anthony Gobert Passes Away At 50

Motorcycle racing fans around the world are mourning the loss of Anthony Gobert, an iconic figure in the sport, who passed away at the age of 50. Gobert’s career began at a young age, showcasing his talents in the Australian Motocross and Supercross Championships. He achieved remarkable success, winning 17 Australian Motocross and short circuit Championships, as well as a New Zealand Championship and 32 State Titles. His dominance continued as he transitioned to the senior scene, securing wins in the 125 Supercross Championship and making an impact in the 250 and 500 classes.

Gobert’s impressive performances caught the attention of Honda Racing Australia, making him the youngest rider to secure a factory-backed superbike ride at just 17 years old. In 1994, he clinched the Australian Superbike Championship on the new RC45 Honda, further proving his potential. His outstanding skills led to an invitation from Kawasaki to compete in the 1995 World Superbike Championship where he broke records and secured race wins.

However, Gobert faced challenges throughout his career, including injuries and a drug suspension. In 1997, he joined the Lucky Strike Suzuki squad in the World 500 Grand Prix, but a series of engine seizures resulted in a difficult season. Despite setbacks, Gobert’s talent shone through, particularly during his years with the Vance & Hines Team in America, where he was a strong contender in the 1998 and 1999 championships.

Gobert’s career took another turn in 2000 as he joined the Bimota team in the World Superbike Championship. Although facing bankruptcy and limited testing, Gobert showcased his skills with top-ten finishes against more dominant machines. He then had brief stints with Modenas GP and Virgin Yamaha before returning to America with the factory Yamaha squad in 2001, securing wins in both the American Superbike and Supersport Championships.

Anthony Gobert’s career is a testament to his undeniable talent and passion for motorcycle racing. His flamboyant personality and on-track performances will be remembered by fans around the world, forever etched in the history of the sport. As we mourn his passing, we also honor his legacy as one of the greats in motorcycle racing.
