Mountaineers Battle TCU in Crucial NCAA Tournament Showdown

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia University men’s basketball team is gearing up for a critical rematch against TCU tonight at 9 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum. This game is pivotal for the Mountaineers, who are striving to enhance their chances for an NCAA Tournament berth in head coach Darian DeVries‘ inaugural season.
After losing to the Horned Frogs 65-60 in their previous encounter, the Mountaineers enter the game with a current record of 16-11 and 7-6 in the Big 12. WVU’s metrics indicate that they need to secure additional victories to solidify their position in the tournament conversation. “Overall, let’s just go win. Go win a game, try to win the next one and do that to finish out the year,” DeVries commented, referring to the importance of tonight’s matchup.
The Mountaineers, currently ranked No. 48 in the NCAA’s NET evaluation system for at-large bids, have struggled against top-tier teams, compiling a combined 8-11 record in Quad 1 and Quad 2 matchups this season. The stakes are high as they aim to win at least 19 games for a 73.4% chance of securing a tournament spot, which increases to 92.2% with a 20-win season.
Similarly, TCU, ranked No. 74 in NET, is also seeking a postseason opportunity, making this game crucial for both teams. During the earlier contest, TCU overcame a double-digit deficit and relied heavily on guards Vasean Allette and Noah Reynolds, who contributed significantly by combining for 42 points. Allette’s 22 points and 11 rebounds were especially instrumental in sealing the victory for the Horned Frogs.
DeVries emphasized the need for improved defense tonight, particularly in regards to free-throw shooting. “We can’t have that and expect to win games,” he remarked about the free-throw disparity, referencing TCU’s successful 20-of-23 performance from the line in their prior match. “We have to keep them off the free-throw line,” he concluded.
As the Mountaineers prepare for their final four games of the regular season, they remain focused on securing essential wins to boost their NCAA tournament eligibility, beginning with this rematch against TCU. The game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
