Lirr Trains And Stations During Santacon

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced a temporary ban on alcohol consumption on all Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) trains and stations during the upcoming SantaCon event. This ban will be in effect from 4 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, through 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 15. The decision is aimed at enhancing safety and reducing potential disruptions associated with the festive but often rowdy event.

SantaCon, an annual event where participants dress in Santa Claus costumes and visit various bars and venues, has historically led to increased alcohol consumption and related issues. By prohibiting alcohol on LIRR trains and stations, the MTA hopes to mitigate these problems and ensure a safer environment for all commuters.

In addition to the alcohol ban, the MTA has been focusing on other safety and accessibility initiatives. Recently, the MTA announced plans to make the Gates Avenue J/Z subway station more accessible as part of its 2020-2024 Capital Plan. This includes the installation of new elevators to improve accessibility for all users.

The LIRR, being the busiest commuter railroad in North America, carries an average of 301,000 customers each weekday on 735 daily trains. Ensuring safety and comfort for such a large number of passengers is a top priority for the MTA, especially during high-traffic events like SantaCon.
