Mumbai Indians Seek First Win Against Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium

MUMBAI, India — The Mumbai Indians are poised to secure their first victory of IPL 2025 as they face the Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 12 at Wankhede Stadium on March 31. With Hardik Pandya at the helm, the team is determined to bounce back after two consecutive losses to Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans.
In contrast, the Kolkata Knight Riders, led by Ajinkya Rahane, enter the match with one win and one loss, having recently triumphed over the Rajasthan Royals. This latest confrontation comes at a crucial juncture for MI, currently positioned last in the points table, as they seek to revive their campaign.
The match begins at 7:30 p.m. IST, coinciding with favorable batting conditions expected from the Wankhede pitch, which has been described as a ‘batter’s paradise’ by former cricketers.
Bumrah’s absence continues to cast a shadow over MI’s bowling attack. The star bowler has yet to recover fully from a back injury, which has sidelined him since January. His counterpart in the bowling department, Trent Boult, will be crucial for MI’s chance at a turnaround as they aim to utilize the early swing conditions.
Hardik Pandya, upon winning the toss, opted to bowl first. He explained, “Knowing Wankhede, dew may or may not come in. There might be some early swing, it plays well so we thought chasing is a good option.”
Conversely, Rahane expressed his doubt about the wicket conditions, stating, “We wanted to bowl first as well but I was confused looking at the wicket, generally Wankhede is a good batting surface so I feel it’s a good toss to lose.”
Both teams have made strategic changes to their lineups. MI brings in debutant Ashwani Kumar and Will Jacks, while KKR reintroduces Sunil Narine, who missed the previous match due to illness. Narine’s form could be pivotal for KKR, especially in a venue where MI has historically performed well.
Kolkata Knight Riders’ coach Chandrakant Pandit emphasized the importance of the upcoming match, saying, “More than anything, I definitely think about the way our team has played the last game. Mumbai Indians have not been doing that, so that is another advantage that we can put pressure on them.”
The head-to-head statistics favor MI, with 23 wins out of 34 matches against KKR. However, recent performances have seen KKR gain the upper hand, winning four of the last five encounters.
The Wankhede experience is heightened by local support, as MI fans hope to witness their team rediscover its form on home soil. MI’s chances hinge on improved consistency from star players like Suryakumar Yadav and the youthful energy of Tilak Varma, who have shown promise amid the early struggles.
In a season that is still in its infancy, the stakes remain high as both teams aim for the crucial points that could tilt the balance of IPL 2025 in their favor.
