MVP Race Tightens: Gilgeous-Alexander vs. Jokić as Season Nears End

DENVER, Colo. — With only a week left in the 2024-25 NBA season, the competition for the Kia MVP award has intensified as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokić emerge as the clear frontrunners. Both players have showcased exceptional performances, making it one of the closest MVP races in recent years.
Gilgeous-Alexander, leading the league in scoring, has averaged 32.9 points per game, coupled with 6.3 assists and 5.1 rebounds. His Oklahoma City Thunder sit at the top of the Western Conference with a record of 64-12, giving him an edge in discussions about individual accolades tied to team success.
“Winning is the ultimate goal, but individual recognition is also important,” said Gilgeous-Alexander during a recent press conference. “I’m honored to be in the conversation, especially alongside a player as incredible as Jokić.”
Jokić, on the other hand, has been equally impressive, averaging 29.3 points, 12.8 rebounds, and 10.2 assists per game. His unique ability to influence the game through scoring and playmaking earned him the nickname “The Joker.” This season, he also recorded a historic 61-point triple-double, further solidifying his case for the MVP title.
“Nikola Jokić, bruh? Oh my God, he might be the best basketball player I’ve ever seen close up,” said Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards after Jokić’s latest performance. “The MVP race is crazy, man. I don’t know. I just don’t know.”
The debate over the MVP winner often revolves around historical precedents and how past choices could inform current voting. Notable examples include Michael Jordan, who led the league in scoring in 1997 yet lost out to Karl Malone, and Wilt Chamberlain, who averaged 50.4 points but was overshadowed by Bill Russell in 1962.
This year’s race between Gilgeous-Alexander and Jokić resonates with these past controversies, as both players possess compelling cases for the top honor. While Jokić may have superior individual stats, the success of the Thunder might prompt voters to favor Gilgeous-Alexander.
“Winning should weigh heavily when voters consider an MVP, but how do you value individual excellence against team success?” asked ESPN analyst Zach Lowe. “That’s the dilemma facing every voter this year.”
The MVP dialogue will take center stage as the Denver Nuggets, led by Jokić, face the Golden State Warriors on Friday night. This matchup is not only significant for playoff seeding but also highlights the competition between Jokić and fellow superstar Stephen Curry.
In addition to the MVP front-runners, Giannis Antetokounmpo continues to put up impressive numbers for the Milwaukee Bucks. He is averaging a 30-point double-double and remains a wild card in the MVP race.
While Gilgeous-Alexander leads the official MVP odds, Jokić remains closely behind. The debate regarding the rightful owner of the Kia MVP award will likely continue until the final votes are tallied and the winner is announced next month.
