Myles Rice Transfers to Maryland, Boosting Terps’ Roster for Next Season

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Myles Rice, a guard from Indiana, announced his decision to transfer to Maryland‘s men’s basketball team on Instagram Sunday, marking the Terps’ third commitment of the offseason. The 6-foot-2 redshirt sophomore averaged 10.1 points, 2.8 assists, and 2.8 rebounds over 32 games last season at Indiana, where he started in 25 of those matches.
In his first year with the Hoosiers, Rice demonstrated his shooting skills, finishing with a field goal percentage of 41.2% and a three-point shooting percentage of 32.5%. Prior to joining Indiana, Rice spent three seasons at Washington State, where he redshirted the 2021-22 season due to health issues related to Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He received his last chemotherapy treatment on March 9, 2023, and returned to the court with impressive performance, being named to the All-Pac-12 first team and Freshman of the Year during his tenure at Washington State.
Rice expressed his excitement on his social media about joining Maryland and its new head coach, Buzz Williams. “I’m ready to start a new chapter in my basketball career and help Maryland reach new heights,” Rice stated.
His transfer adds to the growing list of changes for both Maryland and Indiana. Rice becomes the second former Hoosier to transfer within the Big Ten, following Jordan Geronimo, who left Indiana after exhausting his eligibility in 2025. Indiana will look to rebuild under new head coach Darian DeVries, who is facing a significant roster overhaul, losing multiple key players.
Rice’s impending move could be strategic, as he is likely to earn a starting position next season. His connection to Indiana runs deep, as he was involved in a pivotal moment during the Terps’ 70-67 victory against the Hoosiers in January, where a late-game error led to his team’s loss.
As Maryland prepares for its upcoming season, Rice joins fellow transfer Solomon Washington as they work to bolster the Terps’ lineup. This influx of talent comes at a time when Maryland is dealing with the departure of several key players, including those from last year’s starting lineup.
In 2024-25, Rice was noted for his fluctuating performance, managing to play all games yet moving from a starter to a reserve role under former head coach Mike Woodson, with averages of 10.1 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per contest.
With Rice on board, Maryland fans are eager to see how his addition will impact the team’s success in the upcoming season. “Myles has the potential to make a significant impact,” an excited fan commented on social media. “We can’t wait to see him in a Terps jersey.”
The Terps aim to build a competitive squad after losing their head coach and starting players, with Rice’s transition symbolizing hope for a fresh start as they attempt to navigate the challenges of the transfer portal.
