Nafissatou Thiam Makes History at the 2024 Summer Olympics with Third Consecutive Heptathlon Gold
The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, witnessed a historic moment in the women’s heptathlon event. Nafissatou Thiam of Belgium became the first woman to win the gold medal in the heptathlon at three consecutive Olympic Games. The event, held on August 8 and 9, 2024, at the Stade de France, saw Thiam dominate with a total of 6880 points.
The women’s heptathlon, which consists of seven events, was contested by 23 athletes from 14 nations. The schedule spanned two days, with four events on the first day (100 meters hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200 meters) and three events on the second day (long jump, javelin throw, and 800 meters).
Thiam’s victory marked a significant milestone in her career, solidifying her position as one of the most accomplished heptathletes in Olympic history. Her performance was part of a broader Olympic program that saw numerous records and achievements across various sports.
In other Olympic news, the games were also marred by controversy, particularly in the women’s soccer tournament. Canada‘s women’s soccer coach, Bev Priestman, was fired following an independent review of a drone surveillance scandal. The incident involved a drone flying over New Zealand‘s practice sessions, leading to a fine of $228,000 and the loss of six standings points for Canada Soccer.
The U.S. equestrian team also made headlines as US Equestrian announced the short list for the U.S. Jumping Team ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The list includes notable athletes such as Karl Cook, Natalie Dean, and McLain Ward, who will compete in various observation events to secure their spots on the final team.
