Nashville SC Seeks First MLS Win Against Portland Timbers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Nashville SC will host the Portland Timbers at Geodis Park on March 9, 2025, seeking their first win of the 2025 Major League Soccer season. After enduring a 2-0 loss to New York Red Bulls in their last match, Nashville is eager to turn their fortunes around.
The Boys in Gold are currently struggling, having recorded only one point in their first two matches of the season. Their previous game against New York Red Bulls saw them fail to convert multiple scoring opportunities, leading to a disappointing defeat.
“We need to be more assertive in front of goal and capitalize on the chances we create,” said Nashville SC head coach Gary Smith. “We have a talented squad that is capable of much more.”
Nashville began the season with optimism after an impressive pre-season, during which they earned four victories and one draw, scoring 15 goals and maintaining three clean sheets. However, their transition to regular-season play has been rocky.
Portland Timbers, in contrast, will enter this weekend’s match riding a wave of confidence following a 1-0 win over Austin FC, which ended a streak of three consecutive losses. This rebound puts them in a strong position as they look to assert themselves in the standings.
“Every point matters, and we aim to build on our recent performance,” said Portland head coach Phil Neville. “Nashville may have their challenges, but they are always tough opponents at home.”
In their last encounter, Nashville SC struggled in a goalless draw against New England Revolution, showcasing an inability to convert opportunities into goals. They will aim to correct this as they face Portland, a side that they have historically struggled against.
Both squads have shown potential thus far, with Portland also facing injury concerns, including the absence of key players. Portland will be without their left-back, who has a thigh injury, and a forward sidelined with a knee issue.
Nashville SC’s starting lineup may also experience changes due to injuries. Forward Hany Mukhtar, a vital player for their attacking lineup, remains sidelined with a knee injury, further straining their offensive options.
Despite these challenges, the team is determined to put forth a strong showing in front of their home fans this weekend. With a packed stadium expected, Nashville SC will look to leverage the support to secure a crucial victory.
“Our home crowd is crucial for us; their energy can be the difference-maker in tight matches,” Smith added.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CST at Geodis Park, and anticipation is high as both teams aim to capitalize on this pivotal early-season matchup.
