INDIANAPOLIS — Natasha Howard, the All-Star power forward, is ready to make an impact with the Indiana Fever this season. Joining the team after a strong performance last year with the Dallas Wings, Howard hopes to fill a crucial gap in the Fever’s rotation.

The Fever faced challenges in 2024 with a lack of consistency at the power forward position. Despite the talent on the team, injuries impacted player performance. Smith, who started for much of the season, did not mesh with the Fever’s play style, leading to her reduced minutes. Other forwards, too, were sidelined for significant time.

This year, the Fever are optimistic that Howard will elevate the team’s performance. “She can fill the gaps that last year’s Fever felt,” said Fever head coach. After 11 years in the WNBA, Howard is determined to be pivotal in her 12th season.

At a recent media day, Howard shared her ambitions. “One thing for me, I actually want to win MVP and also Defensive Player of the Year,” she stated. “At the end, just holding that [championship] trophy.” While she has not secured these honors since 2019, her strong belief in herself is evident.

Howard’s versatility makes her a perfect fit for Indiana. Her shooting and defensive skills contribute to a well-rounded game, crucial for the Fever’s up-tempo style. Last season, she averaged 17.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game with Dallas but is expected to take on a different role with the Fever.

In the preseason, Howard showcased her potential, averaging 9.7 points and 5.7 rebounds over three games. Her shooting percentage of 57.9%, combined with her improved passing skills, signals a promising season ahead. “She’s hungry to continue to grow,” the head coach added, emphasizing Howard’s drive.

Howard’s impact goes beyond statistics. As a seasoned player, her mentorship is invaluable for younger teammates. Rookie has already acknowledged Howard’s influence, stating, “They’re good people … they teach me every single day.” Howard’s presence is being felt, and her leadership may guide the Fever through challenging moments this season.

With the season set to kick off Saturday against the Chicago Sky, the focus will be on Howard’s ability to deliver on her ambitions. If she succeeds, it could be a breakthrough year for the Fever.
